History of MRSM Kota Kinabalu

MARA Junior Science College Kota Kinabalu is the first MRSM in Sabah, developed within the Sabah Forestry Development Board (SAFODA) Reserve Forest Reserve Reserve area with 35 acres. MRSM was established by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development which aims to produce more Bumiputera students in science and technology.

MRSM Kota Kinabalu's foundation stone was deployed by Y. B. Dato 'Mustapha Mohamed on 7 March 1999 equivalent to 19 Zulkaedah 1419. MRSM opened the first registration door on 7 April 2002 with the inclusion of 190 pioneer students from all over Sabah. The registration ceremony was officiated by Y.B. Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail who was then Assistant Minister to Sabah Chief Minister, and Mana Mana State Assemblyman. The next registration on May 4, 2002 with a new student of 102 students made the total number of pioneer students to 292.

Background of MRSM Kota Kinabalu

The government has allocated the Safoda Forest Reserve to set up the first MARA Junior Science College in Sabah. MRSM was established by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) aimed at producing more bumiputera students in science and technology. The first MRSM established in Malaysia was the MARA Junior Science College of Seremban, Negeri Sembilan in 1972.

The date of establishment of MRSM Kota Kinabalu was not ascertained, however, based on MRSM Kota Batu's placement by Y.B. Dato 'Mustapa Mohammed, the date was on 7 March 1999 equivalent to 19 Zulkaedah 1949.

Infrastructure MRSM Kota Kinabalu

MRSM Kota Kinabalu has several buildings. Among them are the Academic Blocks used for teaching and learning sessions, Administrative Blocks for all administrative matters. The Teacher's Office is located near the administrative block. A library equipped with a showroom named Ibnu Sina Library.

This library is combined with the laboratory building used for science practice. Other buildings include the Prince's Homestay and Princess Dormitory, Hall of Fame, Multipurpose Hall called the Joint, Co-operative and Laundry Hall to facilitate laundry students. Surau is also available for worship, the Teacher's Housing Block and a special place for a sick student known as Sick-Bay.
